A child&#8217;s speech therapy requires <strong>strong parental involvement<\/strong> &#8211; no easy feat when work is precarious, and their other children have needs of their own.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/transformingcleft.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/04\/successes-150x150.png\" alt=\"successes\" itemprop=\"image\" height=\"150\" width=\"150\" title=\"successes\" onerror=\"this.style.display='none'\"  \/>\n<h3>\n\t\tSuccesses\n\t<\/h3>\n\t<p>In Chile, TF&#8217;s partner NGO Cleft&#8217;s initiative <i>&#8216;Pratica en linea&#8217;<\/i> has enriched children&#8217;s experiences with fun, <strong>game-inspired, online speech therapy\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In 2022, TF supported the launch of the <strong>first speech therapy master&#8217;s program<\/strong> at the University of Addis Ababa. Many students participate in a practicum with TF&#8217;s local partner, Yekatit 12, focused on cleft care.\u00a0<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/transformingcleft.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/04\/did-you-know-150x150.png\" alt=\"did you know\" itemprop=\"image\" height=\"150\" width=\"150\" title=\"did you know\" onerror=\"this.style.display='none'\"  \/>\n<h3>\n\t\tDid you know?\n\t<\/h3>\n\t<p>Speech therapy at the time of a child&#8217;s first words can improve their long-term outcomes. TF&#8217;s partners work closely with parents so they can support their child&#8217;s progress.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>\n\t\tHearing Clearly: Gebrela&#8217;s Cleft Care \n\t<\/h2>\n\t<p>Cleft Care in Focus\u202f\u00a0\u00a0 <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/transformingcleft.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/04\/hearing-300x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"80\" height=\"80\" \/> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/transformingcleft.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/04\/surgery-300x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"80\" height=\"80\" \/><\/p>\n\t<p>Additional Supports\u202f\u00a0\u202f\u00a0\u00a0 <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/transformingcleft.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/04\/nutrition-300x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"81\" height=\"81\" \/> &amp; More<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/transformingcleft.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/05\/AR-COUNTRIES-MAP_Ethiopia-300x300.png\" alt=\"AR-COUNTRIES MAP_Ethiopia\" itemprop=\"image\" height=\"300\" width=\"300\" title=\"AR-COUNTRIES MAP_Ethiopia\" onerror=\"this.style.display='none'\"  \/>\n\t<p>Nurit was relieved when her daughter, <strong>1.5 year old Gebrela<\/strong><strong>,<\/strong> made it successfully through her <strong>third surgical treatment<\/strong> at CURE Ethiopia, Transforming Faces&#8217; local partner.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The procedure was shorter and less intimidating than her daughter&#8217;s cleft lip and cleft palate surgeries. By reducing the chance of <strong>cleft-connected hearing loss<\/strong><strong>,<\/strong> Nurit knew it was worth it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>With ear surgery complete, Gebrela&#8217;s hearing will now regularly be monitored by the team at CURE. As she continues Comprehensive Cleft Care, she will participate in <strong>speech therapy<\/strong><strong>,<\/strong> which also relies on well-functioning hearing, to help her to speak confidently and clearly in preparation for school.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Reflecting on Gebrela&#8217;s birth, Nurit explained <em><strong>&#8220;I had never seen anyone with cleft before, so seeing my daughter&#8217;s cleft lip and palate overwhelmed me&#8221;<\/strong><\/em><em><strong>.<\/strong> <\/em>At that moment, her midwife helped her understand that treatment was possible.
